As the first city in Indiana, our heritage has given us the tools to meet the evolving needs of our community.

The area around the current city was once the home of Shawnee, Wabash, and the Miami tribes. Vincennes was first a fur trading outpost was founded by François-Marie Bissot, Sieur de Vincennes and stood as the capitol of the Indiana Territory making it the oldest European settlement in Indiana. The British took possession of the settlement renaming it Fort Sackville which was then captured in the Revolutionary War by George Rogers Clark.

Many of the early city buildings display direct influences of French architecture, while many buildings and homes in the Old Town section of Vincennes are dated pre-1900. The revival of French architecture can be found on the Vincennes University campus, to celebrate our rich history.

In 1801, Vincennes served as the home of William Henry Harrison during his governorship of the Indiana Territory. Harrison later went on to become the United States' ninth president. His home, the Grouseland Mansion, is a museum full of artifacts from Harrison's time here.

The City of Vincennes is also one of only 3 communities in the entire state of Indiana with a National Park within our City limits - the George Rogers Clark National Historic Park & Monument are located in the southwestern corner. Vincennes' blend of historical landmarks, colorful arts scene, thriving economy, and modern amenities make it a unique and welcoming place for residents and visitors alike.
