Vincennes Mayor Al Baldwin strongly encourages every City resident to complete & return the U.S. Census forms when you receive them in the mail. It is vitally important that everyone be counted because Census information determines how many seats each state will have in the U.S. House of Representatives as well as boundaries of legislative districts. Businesses use census data to locate supermarkets, shopping centers, new housing and other facilities. Census information helps determine locations for schools, roads, hospitals, child-care and senior citizen centers, and more. Every year, more than $300 billion in federal funds is awarded to states and communities based on census data.

The U.S. Census has begun a targeted effort in Vincennes to recruit workers to take the census next spring. Census takers (also known as enumerators) are hired to make sure our city is represented as accurately as possible. Their primary responsibility is to collect census information from residents that have not sent back their 2010 census form. They explain the purpose of the census and record their responses. Census takers will be placed in their own communities. These temporary jobs have flexible schedules and will not exceed 40 hours per week. Census takers will be paid for training and reimbursed for work-related travel. To apply, call 1-866-861-2010 to schedule an appointment to take the census test. Applicants may not show up at a testing site without an appointment. For more information, including a practice test, go to the jobs@census link at www.census.gov. All census takers must pass a security background check. To qualify for a job with the census, applicants must be a U.S. Citizen; be at least 18 years old; have a valid Social Security Number; have a valid driver’s license and bring 2 forms of approved ID to the testing site.

For your convenience, information regarding the “Sixth Street Project” is now available on the City Website’s Main Page. Just click on the “Sixth Street Project” icon in the upper right corner of the main page for information about the proposed 6th Street realignment project which involves new bridge construction and grade separation associated with 3 different rail line crossings located within the City of Vincennes. This website link from Beam, Longest and Neff, L.L.C. provides detailed information about the project and will keep the community updated on current developments and public involvement opportunities.

Because all railroad crossings in the City of Vincennes are owned by CSX Railroad, the City is not allowed to perform any kind of repairs or maintenance on them. Anyone encountering railroad track crossings which are in need of repair are encouraged to report it immediately to CSX. The number to call is 1-800-848-4542. After dialing this number, please press 7…then please press 4 to speak to a CSX Operator. At each crossing, a white metal plate with black numbers and letters is attached to one of the flashing light poles which contain information necessary for CSX to identify individual crossings.

The Vincennes Police Department is promoting a child passenger safety public service geared to protect Hoosier children’s lives on the nation’s highways. The Vincennes Police Department is establishing a permanent fitting station during normal business hours. This permanent fitting station will be staffed by a nationally certified child passenger safety technician who will inspect car seats and instruct families how to properly secure them in their vehicles. Statistics show that at least four out of five car seats are used incorrectly. Improper use of a child safety seat can lead to severe injury
and or death. Parents and caregivers can call the Vincennes Police Department at (812)882-1630 to schedule an appointment to have their car seat installation checked. Also, adults will be provided material and instruction on proper child passenger safety and car seat installation.

The 2010 Recycling Pickup Schedule is posted on this website on the “City Announcements” page. Mayor Baldwin expresses his thanks & appreciation to everyone in helping keep Vincennes green & growing.

The city’s collection site on Old Terre Haute Road is open 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays each week for residents to dump their own yard debris, leaves, and limbs. You must empty your containers at the site and take those containers with you. The site is closed on Saturdays until Spring.

All residents are reminded the “Mayor’s Assistance Center” (M.A.C.) is available by calling 882-H.E.L.P. To respond immediately to the needs and concerns of every Vincennes resident, Mayor Baldwin has established 882-H.E.L.P. (882-4357) as the M.A.C. phone number for assistance. This dedicated phone line is open to receive calls from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. regarding items that need to be addressed immediately.
